绝对意想不到的“86”

在英语词典中 eighty-six 有一个特别的意思，是 “取消”或“拒绝向某人提供服务” 。

我们来看看英语词典的解析：

再对eighty-six拓展一下，有一种说法是，“86”诞生于上世纪二三十年代的餐饮服务业。

如果某食物卖完了或不再供应了(No longer available)，厨师会用“86”来表示None，即“没有了”。

然后美国人觉得它和“nix”是同韵俚语。然而nix就是美式俚语，且相同含义都表示“saying ‘no’ to”（阻止；拒绝）

例句 ●

The bar’s policy is that bartenders have the authority and responsibility to 86 customers who disrupt other patrons. 

这个酒吧的政策是调酒师有权力和责任拒绝服务打扰其他顾客的客人。

再后来，86逐渐进入大众语言中，而不仅限于餐厅和酒吧，衍生出了“驱赶/discard”甚至是“丢弃、扔掉-get rid of”，以及“杀死”的意思。

比如《行尸走肉》一集中，就用到了86作为“杀死”的含义。

总结来说，如果你在餐饮业工作，那么在表达某样菜品没有了你可以直接说“86 something-某菜没有了，不要接单了”，或者有人捣乱，你可以“86 someone-赶走某人”。 

英语中超有意思的“谐音梗”

英语中也有“谐音梗”，例如：

1、“Dog and Bone”代替 “phone”（电话）

I’ll give you a bell on the dog and bone.

我会给你打电话。

2、“Ruby Murray ”代替 “curry”（咖喱），

Fancy a Ruby Murray tonight?

今晚想吃咖喱吗？

3、“Bar net Fair”代替 “hair”（头发）

I’m getting my Barnet Fair done tomorrow.

我明天要去做头发。

4、“Apple s and pears”代替“Stairs”（楼梯）

He hasn’t made it up those apples and pears in ten years.

5、“Adam and Eve”代替“Believe”（相信）

6、“T rouble and strife”代替“Wife”（妻子）

再跟大家拓展一些有趣数字的俚语，six and two threes=半斤八两，不相上下

在国外牛津词典的中英双译是这样的：

a situation in which the alternatives are considered equivalent.

被认为是对等的一种情况。

换成我们中文的话就会有半斤八两的含义，同样在英语语法中还有一句相类似的英语短语，不过表达稍微会长一丢丢。但是它们的意思是一样的：

six of one and half a dozen of the other

这句短语直接翻译就是：一个人是六个和另外一个是半打（在外国的计量单位六个等于半打）。

两个是完全相同的，只不过说法用词有所差别。

eleventh hour

eleventh hour=千钧一发

在外国中eleventh hour也不是那么简单的哟，正常情况下它的确表达的是11点。但是它背后还存在一个意思。

因为11点距离12点只有一小时，如果有些事情着急要12点完成是不是就相当的不够时间呢？

于是后来老外就把eleventh hour引申为“千金一发、危难紧急之时”。

He postponed his trip at the eleventh hour. 

他在最后一刻推迟了旅行。

watch your six

watch your six=正后方

美剧中会听到老外说“watch your six”，可千万别小瞧了它的意思，这里的six不是代表着数字6哦。

现在学姐跟小伙伴们科普一下，一开始watch your six是使用在战场的。

空军的飞行员在交战的时候会有一个盲点，它就是自己的正后方。可是交战的时候敌人最先攻击的地方就是后背。

因为时钟的6点钟方向，是正后方。所以老外的空军就使用watch your six来提醒战友小心自己的正后方或者后背。

渐渐的老外们还延伸表达让别人要“做事小心”！

You must watch your six so as not to fall down.你要小心，以免摔倒。
